A sad day here

A very sad day here in Australia - terrible bushfires are still burning across the state of Victoria where they have claimed many, many lives, homes and animals. Some survivors have been terribly burnt, many have lost everything they owned, some small towns have been completely destroyed. In terms of loss of life it is the worst natural disaster we have seen in the nation's recorded history.

We have a large country with a small population, and a disaster like this makes a huge impact on us all. One sign of that is the unparalleled amount of donations that have already been made to relief funds. Aussie style bloggers are also part of the outpouring of generosity - to name a few, Imelda Matt and Super Kawaii Mama (among others) have details of where to donate, Keshe from the Vintage Year is donating part of her Ebay profits, and Trish from Trish Hunter Finds has written a very moving post about the loss of her family home in the fires.

One of those days where I can only feel grateful for the fact that the people I love are all safe and well and far from harm's way.

burst into tears last night at the BBC news as I finally faced up to the terrible scale of the tragedy. So many lives- I was there in 83, when we hoped that the lessons learned in Ash Wednesday would help it to never happen again. Weighed down by sadness and terrible images, but as you say we must focus on the response: how can we help? And try to think about the lucky escapes.

It is terribly sad, I cannot understand why some of these have been deliberately lit. It's sickening. I want to help, am considering giving blood soon. x

I was so sad to read about this :(. Also it makes me really angry that someone would do this on purpose.

I've been following all the news reports on skynews and its just devastating. The worst interview I saw was with a guy in front of what obviously used to be his house and he was saying he had lost everything but the clothes he was wearing, and in the same sentence that his neighbours lost their two children. Its unfathomable how big of a disaster this is.

It really is beyond comprehension.. Especially Trish, I went to read her blog after seeing it mentioned on yours. It's just so so sad, I was overwhelmed by the braveness of those poor CFA volunteers who were out fighting fires in the knowledge that their own homes could be burning at that very moment. It's just awful, so awful. :(

I'm tuning in late for this news; there was a photo on the front page of the paper yesterday, but the story didn't go into too much detail.

I'm sorry to hear about this disaster. My heart goes out to all of Australia.
